Team Sophie are sailing the 49erFX in the British Sailing Team and it's their mission to win a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but they need your help to get there.
They teamed up in March 2018 and since then they have done incredibly well. They’ve qualified Team GB in the 49erFX for Tokyo 2020 by winning Bronze Medals at both the World and the European Championships, and in 2018 they were the only team internationally to medal at both events. In just six months they've achieved a world ranking of sixth in their class.
While they receive a travel and living allowance from the British Sailing Team, UK Sport and the National Lottery, equipment funding is NOT fully covered and an Olympic campaign is extremely expensive. Competing at the pinnacle of the sport means their boats have a competitive life of about 8 months, and a fully-kitted 49erFX costs £36,000.
The boat costs £23,000.
A set of sails costs £3,250
(A main sail is £1,200, a jib is £700 and a spinnaker is £1,350)
and they use four sets of sails per boat.
They also need lots of spares as the loads they sail under means there's a high degree of breakages!
